Alentejo is one of the quietest cycling regions in Southern Europe.

Long empty roads, white villages, vineyards and cork oak forests create a slower rhythm that feels very different from busier cycling destinations. The riding is smooth and continuous, crossing historic towns, rural landscapes and some of the most authentic areas of Portugal.

This tour combines cycling, gastronomy and local culture in a relaxed and immersive way, with carefully selected accommodation and daily stages designed to fully experience the region both on and off the bike.

The Experience

Riding through Alentejo is less about performance and more about rhythm.

The routes follow quiet secondary roads through rolling hills, olive groves, vineyards and small villages where life still moves slowly. Daily stages are balanced and enjoyable, leaving time for local food, wine experiences and moments away from the bike.

Throughout the week, guests stay in historic properties, restored convents and traditional Portuguese estates that reflect the atmosphere and character of the region.

Beyond the Bike

Part of the experience begins once the ride is over.

Evenings are spent in carefully selected historic properties, countryside hotels and traditional Portuguese estates surrounded by vineyards, olive groves and quiet rural landscapes.

Local cuisine, regional wines and the slower rhythm of Alentejo naturally become part of the journey itself, creating an atmosphere that feels authentic, relaxed and deeply connected to the region.

Day 1 - Marvão – Castelo de Vide – Marvão
Distance: 25km, 427 m.+ - Longer Option: 45 km, 998 m+
Our ride today takes us in a loop to Castelo de Vide, a town celebrated for its medieval castle, Renaissance fountains, and age-old Jewish Quarter. This area's relative isolation has kept it wonderfully free of tourist crowds, which is fortunate for us, as its quiet roads offer some of the most stunning scenery imaginable. We'll explore the small 13th-century Synagogue and enjoy panoramic views from the castle's rooftops. On our return journey to Marvão, the landscape is punctuated by massive granite outcrops, and as we approach the medieval village, we'll be enveloped by forests of chestnut and cork oak trees.
Day 2 - Flôr da Rosa
Distance: 39 km, 450 m+ - Longer Option: 60 km, 570 m+
Following a 5-kilometer descent to Portagem, a village featuring a historic medieval bridge that once served as a crossing for numerous Jewish people fleeing the Spanish Inquisition, our cycling journey continues along the Serra de São Mamede's hillsides and through the 'Montado,' a distinctive cork oak forest. Upon reaching Flôr da Rosa, we're presented with two options: relax at the Hotel/Pousada, appreciating its unique blend of medieval and contemporary architectural styles and enjoying the pool, or extend our ride to the Alter do Chão stud farm, renowned for breeding and training Pure Blood Lusitano horses since 1748. After observing the horses, and perhaps encountering foals, we can return to our accommodation by van or cycle back, passing Crato Castle and rural scenery en route to the Pousada/Monastery.
Day 3 - Estremoz
Distance: 66 km, 950 m+
This day's ride will highlight the Alentejo's characteristic flat terrain as we journey towards the Pousada Rainha Santa Isabel, renowned for the legend of the bread-to-roses miracle. Throughout our route, you'll find ample opportunities for photography, passing through a charming succession of small, whitewashed villages, interspersed with picturesque vineyards and olive groves. To conclude our cycling, we'll visit Herdade das Servas winery for a tasting of their local wines and a tour, followed by dinner at a highly regarded tapas restaurant, winery, and local grocery.
Day 4 - Estremoz, the Marble Land
Distance: 57 km, 340 m+
Today offers a choice: relax poolside or embark on a circular cycling route to the heart of Alentejo's marble industry. Our ride will take us past impressive quarries, where the purest white marble is mined—a prized material for sculptors—and used extensively in local architecture, including the grand Vila Viçosa royal palace. The Bragança dynasty, Portugal's final royal line, favored Vila Viçosa for their rural retreat, and we'll pause there for a coffee break. Our return to the Pousada will feature picturesque small villages like Alandroal and visits to boutique wineries. The afternoon allows for independent exploration of Estremoz's charming streets and traditional shops.
Day 5 - Monsaraz
Distance: 61 km, 780 m+
Our journey today is fueled by the anticipation of reaching Monsaraz, a captivating village nicknamed the 'eagle's nest.' The route offers a rich tapestry of scenery, transitioning from the eucalyptus forests of the Serra da Ossa to a Mediterranean-style landscape abundant with vineyards and olive groves. As we traverse an ancient cork oak forest, we'll keep an eye out for the indigenous black pigs, a potential highlight of Dona Isabel's expertly prepared dinner. Should a filmmaker seek an authentic medieval setting, Monsaraz would be an ideal, ready-made backdrop. Upon arrival, we'll park our bikes within the village walls, stepping back six centuries into a national monument where genuine medieval charm and tranquility prevail, a rare find in modern Europe.
Day 6 - Monsaraz - Évora
Distance: 64 km, 541 m+
Our journey today bridges two of Portugal's most stunning fortified cities. Évora, our final destination, stands as the Alentejo's central hub, showcasing its rich history through the Roman temple, the medieval cathedral, and the pervasive Moorish architectural influences that evoke a sense of past eras. Along our route, we'll traverse villages where the pristine white of the buildings is accented by vibrant blue trim, and encounter ancient Dolmens and Cromlechs, megalithic monuments dotting the landscape, as well as shepherds tending their flocks at a leisurely pace. Upon arrival, a dip in the Convento do Espinheiro's celebrated pool awaits, followed by a walking tour of Évora. We'll conclude our memorable week with a truly authentic farewell dinner, celebrating the local flavors.
Day 7 - Transfer to Lisbone Airport
You have the option to enjoy a leisurely morning, either sleeping in and savoring a relaxed breakfast or starting your day with an invigorating early swim. Afterwards, your guides will provide transportation back to Lisbon airport.
